The Eerie Beauty of Fort de la Chartreuse

The abandoned military compound known as Fort de la Chartreuse had long lost its former glory. Once a formidable stronghold nestled on the outskirts of a quaint European town, it now stood as a testament to the passage of time and the resilience of human creativity.

The fort, its walls weathered and scarred, had become a canvas for the creative minds of the youth. Layers upon layers of graffiti adorned its once-imposing facade, transforming it into a colorful tapestry of expression. Vibrant bursts of color and intricate designs now covered the fortress, each stroke telling a different story. The vibrant artwork, sprayed over cracked concrete and faded red bricks, breathed new life into the old military compound.

Inside the fort, where the sounds of disciplined footsteps and orders once echoed, the barracks had taken on a new purpose. Young soldiers wannabe, armed with paintball weapons, now roamed the halls, their laughter and excitement filling the air. They played at urban warfare, using the fort's labyrinthine corridors and empty rooms as their battlefield. The old walls served as makeshift cover, and the remnants of artists became their props in this paint-splattered drama.

The hospital

The hospital, once a place of healing and recovery, had also found new occupants. It had become a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from the daily grind of life, a place to escape the pressures of the outside world. The abandoned rooms, now adorned with colours, offered a quiet space for contemplation, and the eerie silence of the former medical facility had given way to the hushed conversations of those who sought solace within its walls.

The Prison

Perhaps the most haunting part of Fort de la Chartreuse is the prison. Dark and foreboding, it was a stark reminder of the fort's history. But even here, the graffiti had not been deterred. The prison cells, with their rusted iron bars and peeling paint, were now adorned with messages of hope, resilience, and a yearning for freedom. It was as if the spirits of those who had once been confined here had found a way to leave their mark on the world.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the fort, the young soldiers wannabe put away their paintball weapons, and the visitors seeking solace departed. Fort de la Chartreuse stood in solitude once again, its walls a testament to the ever-changing nature of time and the enduring power of human expression. It was a place where history and creativity converged, where the echoes of the past coexisted with the vibrant hues of the present, a place where the spirit of adventure and imagination had breathed new life into an abandoned military relic.

Thank you

While taking pictures at Fort de la Chartreuse, I met Aurore, a young woman who likes to spend time here studying the long history that pervades this place. She knows this unique area dating back to 1300 when a church was built here and then burned to the ground.

Thank you Aurore for being my guide and sharing with me your knowledge.
